Re:Nylon
Nylon has long been a key material for Prada. The debut of the brand's '84 collection of Pocone nylon in its bags and accessory line garnered an international acclaim. Miuccia Prada later expanded the collection with nylon dresses for her eponymous label and Linea Rossa (the nylon-heavy, ready-for-hypebeast line that Frank Ocean recently decked himself out in at the Met Gala). The Milan-based brand has reinvented its iconic nylon bags by transforming them into sustainable re:Nylon fabrications. The new collection features six classic styles including bags for belts, a shoulder bag, tote bag, duffle bag and two backpacks made of recycled ECONYL fabric that is made from recycled fishing nets, plastics and textile fiber waste that is sourced worldwide.

The repurposed fabric is a result of a partnership with Aquafil, an Italian textile yarn producer that produces Econyl fabric out of regenerated nylon waste, which can be reused repeatedly without losing its quality. The Business of Fashion reports that the repurposed material is part of a larger effort to transition Prada's entire portfolio from virgin nylon to Re:Nylon by 2021. In addition to the six new Re:Nylon bags, the line also includes a pair shoes and boots made of recycled ECONYL and an assortment of clothing made from the same fabrication.
Prada and National Geographic produced a series "What We Carry", a video series that highlights the innovative method used to create Re:Nylon bags. The first video features Harry Potter actress and environmentalist Bonnie Wright and National Geographic Explorer Asher Jay touring an Arizona carpet recycling facility that turns old nylon into repurposed ECONYL.
The Business of Fashion reports that Prada's decision to re-Nylon is their biggest reduction in virgin nylon yet. It will save the company 70,000 barrels of crude oil per year. The move will also reduce the carbon emissions of the company by about 57,000 tonnes. The label recently went fur-free on its clothes and accessories. This is the latest sustainability initiative.
Recycled Nylon
Recycled nylon is not without its drawbacks. It's not biodegradable and can sit in landfills or oceans for a long time until it is broken down into smaller pieces that can cause harm to wildlife. The fabric is also non-breathable and is able to shed microplastics once washed. It also consumes 50 percent less energy to make when compared to regular virgin nylon and is more durable than other bag materials like cotton or wool.
The fabric is made of a combination of waste plastic and petroleum, which is produced from fossil fuels. This means that it doesn't require for more natural resources and the carbon emissions from the production virgin nylon. It is also more manageable than other bag fabrics, as it doesn't need to be dyed or weaved. This makes it an ideal option for bags that are going to be used often like gym and yoga gear.
In addition to its environmental advantages, recycled nylon is a stronger and more flexible material than conventional polyester or cotton. It's also able to withstand a lot of abuse and is therefore ideal for backpacks and other outdoor gear. The material is lightweight and can easily be shaped and stitched to the desired shape of the backpack. Nylon is also a great option for outdoor gear since it is water resistant, and it doesn't absorb odors or mildew as easily as other fabrics.
When choosing a sustainable bag, make sure to look for the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification. This certification tests for chemical residues as also social and environmental responsibility. Look for brands that have this certification because they are likely to be more transparent and accountable in their product offerings.
Patagonia for instance, offers a range of yoga gear and backpacks that are made of recycled nylon, which is known as Econyl. This nylon is produced in a closed loop process that uses 50% less energy than virgin nylon. Additionally, the brand supports organizations that are working to protect our planet.
